“get the hounds, people and horses oriented to hunting again.” It’s basically a practice session designed to get the horses and riders physically fit. Strict clothing rules are generally relaxed. Some Masters, including LeHew, often dispense with coats altogether because of the heat. With its less formal, comfortable approach and bright, sunny weather, LeHew considers it to be “almost the best time of the season. I think it’s the nicest time of year.” Rappahannock, like other hunts, is supported by substantial membership and — capping’ fees, that permit potential members to ride three times before becoming subscribers, and perhaps later, members. Rappahannock maintains a professional huntsman who manages and cares for a pack of more than 70 foxhounds. The hunt is also responsible for reimbursing farmers for any damaged property or loss of livestock as a result of a day’s meet. LeHew stresses that participating in the hunt’s activities should be enjoyable occasions, with all members getting along and having a good time.
