tell you something. We did, however, greatly outnumber them with student fans. Unfortunately, I was dismayed at the amount of cheering the small section did for the opposing team in comparison to our usual ho-hum attitude. Yes, we are heard when a score is made, but this is not the only time we need to cheer. I’m embarrassed at the lack of spirit we as a community show toward each player’s efforts.
As a community, we should support these young women. They are representing us when they step out on that court. I know their record isn’t great but their enthusiasm and efforts are stupendous. The members of the JV and varsity team know they are sometimes playing against more experienced teams of girls that learned the skills at a much younger .age in after school organized activity. Against these odds, these young women do their best, never giving up and show more team spirit and sportsmanship (should I say sportswomanship) than all the people they represent. The wonderful coaches, Luther Stanley, varsity, and Rhonda Jenkins, JV, promote that spirit as they show care and compassion while coaching, never belittling their team members.
In the very near future, such as the next game, I hope, shall occur: more community support by a greater number of attendees; more enthusiastic fans; everyone applauds not just for what their daughter did, but for every effort put forth by each wonderful, young woman; a round of applause for every team player when she goes back to the bench or when she steps onto the floor to play. In addition, I hope we as a community can demonstrate good sportsmanship by welcoming the other players with applause when their starting line-up is called. It doesn’t hurt to put those hands together. After all they are just opponents, not lifethreatening enemies.
In ending I’m asking every basketball fan in Rappahannock County, at least once or twice or more during the remaining season, get off your opinions and support these great, wonderful, young women of RCHS.
