If you have leftover wooden plant stakes or long branches, anchor them in locations around the garden to serve as perches for insect-eating birds, such as flycatchers, robins and bluebirds.

You can make bird feeders from many different cast-offs. A simple bird feeder can be made by securing several hollowed-out grapefruit and orange rinds to a board with tacks. Fill each with birdseed if the board will be mounted horizontally, or a semi-solid mixture composed of birdseed and peanut butter or suet if the board is to be mounted vertically.
