As the old saying goes,
“opinions are like rear ends, everybody has one.” With that in mind, I would ljjce to take this opportunity to express mine, opinion that is. Our community does not support women’s sports. Where is the support that the young women on the Lady Panthers basketball team deserve? During the boys’ basketball games, the bleachers are generally full. However, I find there is a very low turnout for the girls’ games. Therefore, in wondering why, I shall ask a few questions and make a few statements.
Do the basketball fans of Rappahannock County know when there is a home game? How much effort does the Rappahannock News put in bringing the scheduled games to the attention of its readers? Last year there was very little coverage of the girls’ basketball games. However, thanks to Naomi Smoot’s fine writing and Carl Ebom’s superior photography, this paper has progressed somewhat. Ebom had a very nice photo of Sonya Wigington published on the front page of a recent issue of the Rappahannock News. I was at the game and remember seeing him catch that shot. I know he was back far enough to capture the whole picture of this young woman’s talent as she became airborne. Unfortunately, the published picture didn’t do her talent justice. From seeing Ebom’s past photograph’s, I have a feeling he had the perfect picture, but possibly some other employee decided to crop the photo before going to press. If so, this in turn eliminated the effect of the height this young woman attains as she jumps to put that ball through the hoop. ;: A few students have brought to my attention that they do not feel Rappahannock High School promotes the girls’ basketball games as much as they do the boys’ games. I sure hope this isn’t true. I hope administrators and staff demonstrate equal enthusiasm and promotion for both teams. If not, please tiy to remember Equality. ' At the start of the JV home game on Sept. 28, I counted 21 adults sitting in the three sections of the gym usually occupied by RCHS fans. The fourth and last section had 18 adult fans from Strasburg. That alone should
