School children, who represent tomorrow’s market, are also significant consumers of beef products today. To ensure beef stays on the plates of America’s youth, beef producers in Rappahannock County are using checkoff funds to advance two new programs for school food service that promote beef.
“Every day, 94,000 United States schools serve 26.1 million lunches,” according to Cynthia Boggs, Director of Education and Beef Promotion, Virginia Cattle Industry Board. “Maintaining a strong link with our young people is very important to Virginia beef producers.” Not only do these programs address that link and put more beef on school menus, they keep beef in the minds of those who prepare the school lunches everyday.
“By having beef on the menu, schools reinforce the fact that beef is part of a wellbalanced diet and helps children develop balanced eating habits early in life,” says Boggs. Beef promotions also provide new menuing ideas to schools that participate in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs and, therefore, receive USDA donations of commodity meats, including beef.
