Taxes: Welch said he was alarmed that most surrounding counties’ tax rates were considerably lower than Rappahannock’s. Tax rates are considerably lower in Madison, Culpeper, Green, Albemarle, Warren and Page Counties, and only Fauquier has a higher tax rate, he said. He is vocal supporter of land use taxation and said he would like it if the county initiated a financial advisory committee.
Fanning: Welch owns a 100-acre cattle farm that his brother, Dale, operates for him. He said it is becoming more difficult for farmers to make a living and regrets that farming as a career is not attracting young people in the area. ■1 _v
