Other customers, he said, just want the car to “be functional and look pretty” for. their daughter to drive back and forth.
Kachur estimated that it was about 30 years ago that he got in on the first auto body shop class at his Alexandria high school. He drives a 1946 Studebaker pickup he restored himself. Also in his personal garage is a 1968 Firebird convertible.
What’s the lure of these old cars?
“Maybe they learned to drive in ope,” Kachur speculated. “Maybe they’re reliving their teenage years. The cars were pretty simple back then, they were easy to work on.”
The best thing a car shopper can do, he said, is find a knowledgeable person to check out the car before they plunk down the cash. “There’s a lot of cars that are really patched up — people think they’re gold, but they’re really not.”
