“It’s a car for weekends, when the weather Is right,” he said. “From the middle of November through March is pretty much out of the question. And it’s not much fun on those really hot, dog days of summer. But all spring and summer, it’s my favorite toy.”
Among his favorite local roads are Route 688 (“It’s got a lot of great twists and turns.”) and some of the country roads around Jefferson ton.
What kind of mileage does his Bugeye get? “I don’t have the slightest idea,” he said with a laugh. “That’s not what a car like this is about.”
Bowen’s everyday transportation is a Jeep. “That’s about as different from the Sprite as you can get,” Bowen said.
And his sports car is light years away from being state-of-the-art, which' is precisely why he loves it so. "Ibday, they plug cars into a computer, then replace parts and hope that it runs right,” said Bowen, who worked on jet engines in the U.S. Navy*.“With these care, you don’t do that. It’s fun to tinker with the engine and get it running right. When it comes to engines, I’ve always been a troubleshooter, I guess. This gives me a chance to do that.
It’s all about listening to the engine, he says, and the feedback between man aHd machine. It’s the same when he’s driving and feeling a lot more connected to the highway that he ever could in some family sedan. “The sound of this car is neat,” Bowen said. “Like my wife says, she can always hear me coming.”
Now, Bowen would like to locate a late-1970s Morgan — not to replace his Sprite, but to give it some company in bis garage.
