Running rods
In the 18 years that Herbie Waddell has owned Waddell’s Auto Center in The Plains, one thing has become clear to him.
“In Fauquier and Loudoun, there are more street rods and old cars than you’ve ever seen,” he said.
Transmissions, engines, brakes, body work and paint — Waddell said he does it all. Somewhere among the work sheets for insurance body work and air conditioning repair, he fits in old cars.
He explained, “Right now we’re making a frame for a 1936 Plymouth Coupe, putting in all Chevy stuff.”
One of the most interesting renovations he’s tackled was the 1928 TBucket. It took about a year to make the frame, put in the brake lines, work the front and rear ends.
He painted it wild cherry, although if he was working on it today he might be painting it purple, the most requested color at his shop.
Running old. cars is a hobby, Waddell said. “Just like horse people, on weekends they go riding.”
Waddell’s advice to old car shoppers: get the type you want. “When you get an old car you’ve got a body and nothing else. It depends on how much
you want to do to it.
