a figure slowly turning from a noose. A small bonfire revealed a ghostly shape that we took to be a draped dummy — until we were halfway past it and it suddenly sprang to life, moaning and flapping its ragged arms.

Up ahead, strobelight flashes lit up a large machine shed. The irregular bursts, oddly disconcerting against the night sky, made us think of Frankenstein’s experiments. Then the road curved and we clutched each other. “We’re going in there!” we squealed.

And so we did. And the driver slowed down once we were inside ...

Although this was my first hay ride, I felt it wouldn’t be complete without a visit to a graveyard. This one was strewn with hapless corpses and hosted by an overly friendly witch, who begged us not to “go so fast.”

Part of the pleasure of this little scene was that it was illuminated with torches. Not only did that allow us to see all the details, it also meant that we spotted it early and knew it was unavoidable.

Before passing the dark, rippled pond, we met a hardworking hunchback and saw various bits of unlucky anatomy sticking out of a baler.

Then we heard screaming
