Fatal argument
“The altercation erupted between the two subjects, who had known each other for a long time,” said Sherertz.
Nichols operated a tree-trimming business, and hired Johnson to work for him from time-to-time.
“Johnson would work for Nichols and be paid the next day,” Sherertz explained. “The shooting was an apparent dispute over Johnson’s wages.”
During the argument, Johnson allegedly produced a gun, and shot Nichols one time at close range.
“Subsequent to the shooting, a member of (Johnson’s) household called the Sheriff’s Office,” Sherertz continued. Law enforcement and rescue units were immediately dispatched to the scene.
First to reach Johnson’s house was Dep. Connie Compton, who secured the scene. Rescue personnel examined Nichols and determined that he had died of his wounds.
“Witnesses were not certain where the shooter (Johnson) was at that time,” said Sherertz. “Dep. Compton called for Capt. Chris Williams and Lt. David Sollesbee, Criminal Investigations Division, to come to the scene.”
