‘Need’ must be defined
According to County Administrator John McCarthy — who has been following the telecommunication issue in Rappahannock for several years — the reason Sprint or any other telecommunications company is interested in installing facilities here is to provide a complete “telecommunications network” for its subscribers.
Sprint’s preliminary six-tower plan is designed to provide basically uninter* rupted cell phone service for their customers passing through Rappahannock on US Rt. 211, Rt. 231 and Rt. 522. The improved cellular service available to local residents would be would be a byproduct.
“The cellular industry couldn’t care less about Rappahannock County,” said McCarthy. “There are not enough customers to justify building a single tower, much less however many they think they’ll have to build.”
However, McCarthy noted that one goal of the hearing will be to determine if many county residents would be willing to sacrifice the viewshed — if it comes to that — in order to have this service available to them.
