At the scene, the sheriff found family members who were “emotionally distraught” over the shooting.
Kathryn Jean Nichols, the victim’s wife, came to Johnson’s house after hearing about the shooting and was asked to return home. Later, Dep. Compton went to the Nichols’ home. “We tried to deal with the situation in a compassionate manner,” said Sherertz.
Suspect sought
The house was surrounded, and because officers were not sure if Johnson had fled the scene, a State Police helicopter equipped with a “fleur” video system used to detect human beings below in the dark was called in.
Weather conditions were deteriorating, and nothing was found by the helicopter crew. “Eventually, it was determined that Johnson was still in the house,” said Sherertz.
