The menu eliminated many staples of the American diet (pasta, rice, or any form of potato, tomato or chocolate) as Marco Polo had not been to China, and the New World and its contributions to the European diet had not been discovered. The revelers ate with their fingers on wooden trenchers and did their best to adhere to the standards of the court which included trying not to “use their neighbor’s costume for a napkin.”
The banquet was followed by seventh grade boys being knighted and girls being received into the “Order of the Rose.”
The Medieval Banquet was conceived 15 years ago as an enrichment for Pamela Lynn-Tucker’s 7th grade British history and 9th grade medieval history classes. It has grown in recent years to be a popular schoolwide activity.
