Larry C. Sherertz had a landslide victory over John H. Woodward in the hotly contested race for Sheriff in Rappahannock County on Tuesday, Nov. 2. Sherertz received 1,660 votes, while Woodward only garnered 864 votes.
Based on the highest number of votes for the sheriff race alone, only 2,524 voted out of a possible 4,300 in Rappahannock County. The official numbers are not in, but Nancy Newlin at the Registrar gave out these numbers at 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 2.
Newlin reported that the votes were tallied by a record 7:57 p.m. The expediency was due to the new counting machines.
Newlin also said last election 80 percent of the county voted, but this year’s turnout would not be as high. Although absentee ballots still need to be counted.
On the morning of the election at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church on Route 522 near Woodville, a small group of candidates and interested parties were on hand to greet voters in the parking lot of the church.
With umbrellas in hand, the group bantered and made surmises about the election. The general consensus was that the Sherertz and Woodward race would be the most competitive, with nearly equal votes for both sides. But that was not the case.
Franklin Warner beat John Tble for School Board in the Stonewall-Hawthome District, 302216. On the morning of the election, Warner sat in his car while other candidates stood in the rain.
When asked how he felt about this election, Warner jovially replied, “Total up everything everyone said and say I said it....I feel people want to see a change and they feel I can make a change.”
Warner will now have that opportunity.
Bob Anderson was the victor for Board of Supervisors over Cary Thornhill 260-252 in the Stonewall-Hawthome District. He was also at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in the morning talking to Bob Darby, a resident of Woodville, about Anderson’s lack of signs for his campaign.
