Lester Johnson, Jimmy Wine and Joseph Johnson all worked for Steve Nichols during the time they were living together at Johnson’s. Nichols owned a business called Rocky Top Tree Service, which his wife will still manage.
Mrs. Nichols had gone to line dancing on the evening of the murder. When she got home at 9 p.m., her husband’s truck was gone. She figured he was at Johnson’s since they were friends and they spent time there.
Mrs. Nichols said, “I went to Joe’s house and there were cops everywhere. I had the girls with me. That’s when the cops told me my husband was dead. I went back to my house, about a mile away. The children were crying and screaming.”
The Nichols had three girls together, Tiffany Nicole, age 10, Ashley May, age 7, and Ann, age 6.
Mrs. Nichols says, “The girls are having a hard time understanding how their father’s friend, Joe, could hurt him and kill him.”
The Nichols used to help Johnson whenever they could. Mrs. Nichols brought Joe home from the hospital in December when he was released for alcohol treatment. They used to bring him groceries and firewood whenever he needed them.
