westward, and to the cities, were a couple of factors that had an effect on church membership. In addition, most of the parish records were lost during the Civil War.
After the war, however, determined efforts by the congregation and a succession of dedicated clergymen succeeded in making Trinity Church self-supporting by the turn of the century. By 1892, membership had grown to 46.
A bell-tower and vestibule were added during the early 1900s. In 1924, the wood exterior was covered with white pebble-dash stucco. The interior was repaired and decorated during the 1930s, and the stained-glass windows depicting the life and ministry of Christ were dedicated on Palm Sunday, 1937.
St. Paul’s Church in Woodville, established in 1840, was destroyed by a tornado in 1929 and not rebuilt. Its congregation joined either Emmanuel Church in Sperryville or Trinity Episcopal Church.
