Local Soil & Water Conservation District honors Rappahannock residents at the Annual Awards Banquet on Oct. 21 for their conservation efforts.
Following the keynote address by Virginia Delegate, Butch Davies, Turkey Mountain Outfitters owners, Cliff Miller, Jim Hickey, and Jenny Hickey, were honored with the Business & Industry Award. Mrs. Georgia Romine, owner of Catspaw Timber Farm, was honored with the Forestry Award.
Turkey Mountain Outfitters offers catch and release fly-fishing along two miles of the Thornton River. A slide presentation honoring the award winners showed how Turkey Mountain Outfitters implemented several environmentfriendly practices-including the removal of 12 dump-truck loads of trash from the river banks, picking up litter after storms, planting stream banks with grass and trees, and utilizing fencing to keep cattle out of the river and tributaries.
State forester Buck Kline, gave the presentation honoring Mrs. Romine’s conservation , practices. Mr. Kline showed several of the conservation practices at Catspaw Timber Farm, including reparian buffers, planting loblolly pine, forest road stabilization, and riparian buffer plantings.
Mr. Dick McNear, Rappahannock Director and Chairman of CSWCD, presented the award plaques.
The conservation practices of these Rappahannock residents benefit more than just the Thornton River and Rappahannock County as the effects of their efforts “flow downstream” to benefit many waterways of Virginia and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay.
