The murder trial for Joseph Carl Johnson, 41, of Boston began Oct. 25 at the Court House in Rappahannock County. Due to a signed confession, the main issue of the trial was whether or not the killing would be ruled first or second degree murder.
The jury convicted Johnson of first degree murder at 4:52 p.m. on Oct. 27. After the sentencing hearing, the jury deliberated and came back at 8:10 p.m. recommending 35 years imprisonment for the act of murder as a felony and a mandatory, additional three years for the use of a firearm.
Attorney for the Commonwealth, Peter Luke, said, “I’m proud of the jury. They saw their duty and did it. I want a loud and clear message to go out that violence of this sort will not be tolerated in this county....If you commit a crime in this county, don’t bring a gun with you.”
