For the fourth time in as many months, the Washington Town Council discussed the impending year 2000 Fourth of July celebration. As July comes ever closer, the Council and Washington town residents still appear to be undecided as to the nature of this year’s event, and without definitive direction the planning process and the celebration itself may suffer.
Town Fourth of July Committee chair Charlie Tompkins opened discussions on the subject at the January Town Council meeting by asking rhetorically, “I wonder if we are missing the point.” He suggested that the event should be a “viable and pleasant day for those who live in and visit the town,” but noted that instead, the “citizens have been focused on inconveniences and not on what the Fourth means.”
Town Treasurer Elaine Viguerie said that “It is important to decide what the objective is. Is it to bring in revenue?. . . To have a viable and pleasant day? . . .To bring in revenue for the shops?”
