The following are recipes from the Jan. 5, 1950 issue of the Rappahannock News. ' Several readers have indicated they would like to have recipes published from years ago. We will try this adventure and the column will appear as space permits and as often as you, the readers, supply us with recipes. We would like for the recipes to be at least 50 years old. Please feel free to drop a copy of your favorite family recipe by our office at 249 Main Street in Washington or come by and we will make a copy for you. Sugar Cookies 4 heaping cups unsifted flour 1 cup shortening 1 1/2 tablespoons boiling water 1 teaspoon soda - pour boiling water over soda and dissolve it 1 1/2 tablespoon vanilla 3 eggs 2 cups sugar Sift sugar and flour together. Work in shortening. Break three unbeaten eggs into flour and sugar. Put in soda and water and shortening. Work altogether, roll and cut. Added-sprinkle sugar over top-cook in greased pan or pinch a little, roll in palm of hand and flatten out with knife. Mrs. Gilbert Updike Nut Cake 1 quart black walnut meats (floured) 1 pound raisins
