The white flower of the largeleafed magnolia matches the leaves in size, being 12 inches across. This rare tree is southern in distribution and occurs in protected places in the mountains, where its great leaves are not likely to be torn by high winds.
Macrophylla translates simply into “big-leaved.” That it certainly is. I came across the large-leafed magnolia once in a mountain cove in West Virginia and was astonished. Two friends in McLean had this tree on their respective properties, where they had been planted as ornamentals. I must admit I visited each more from a botanical interest than from friendship.
My favorite is the common sweetbay magnolia, Magnolia virginiana, which has the curious quality of being evergreen in the south and deciduous in the north. Those of the Virginia Piedmont are deciduous. In some areas, particularly along the coast,
