quickly fall off. No longer protected by the arching petals, beetles quickly make off to another flower which is in the early stages of the one they just abandoned. They carry a fresh load of pollen from the preceding flower and deposit it on the ripe stigmas of the second flower, thus ensuring cross-pollination. It works, and has worked since the beginning of time.
The fertilized ovaries grow into seeds, which, in turn, get distributed (probably by birds) and sprout, beginning the life of a new Magnolia grandiflora that will, in time, produce flowers to entice beetles with their pungent, distinctive aroma.
