half-acre lots, with regular streets. At a certain point, edicts stopped, and requests from clusters of people were honored for the formation of a town.
In this area, Washington, Va. was laid out by George Washington on July 22, 1749 (Old Style) and it covered 400 acres. The General Assembly legally established it as a town on Dec. 14,1796, as it satisfied the then-rule of having more than 200 people. But the General Assembly also downsized Washington from 400 acres to 25 acres and laid it out into lots of a half-acre each, with "convenient streets." The town of Washington was incorporated as a municipality almost 100 years later, by an act of the General Assembly on Feb. 12, 1894. This Act also extended the previous boundary line by 900 feet on every side. As a result, Washington ballooned from 25 acres to 185 acres. Over time, Washington's size has waxed and waned. It is now 182 acres and is shaped like a Picasso-drawn peach. The population? Still 200 people.
Woodville was officially established as a town by an act in 1798, consisting of 40 acres, laid off in half-acre lots. 12 more acres were added in 1801. But Woodville was never incorporated.
