Country Manor slapped by 84
mph cyclonic winds Thursday

Wind gusted to 84 mph and tornadoes were spawned in Sperryville last Thursday as La Nina continued to provide winter surprises. Brute winds stripped trees of extraneous limbs, trash was freed to scatter unrestrained, and Country Manor suffered the ill effects of a small but virulent twister.
“I was sdared to death,” Country Manor proprietress Phyllis Swindler recounted. “I was looking out the back window and saw a little whirlwind moving past. I came back to the front of the store and saw a big cloud of dust—I thought maybe it was a fire. Then I saw that the far window and merchandise had been sucked right out of the shop!”
The mini-tornado had circled Country Manor, randomly peeling off storm windows, and then settled for a moment at the store’s west end, stripping the display window and pulling clothes, purses, belts and steel display racks and redepositing them across the deck and around the yard.
“Thank God that Tom and Scott were nearby,” Phyllis said. She had called Tom Henry and Scott Muthersbaugh, who came and sealed the window opening with plywood and prevented further damage. Phyllis estimated that damage to the shop and its contents amounted to $27,.000.
