this tree with the sweet-smelling foliage occurs commonly as a shrub. The flowers are miniatures of Magnolia grandiflora and are only 2-3 inches across. They are fragrant and give the tree its name of sweetbay. • *
The sweetbay magnolia has the same glossy, green leaves — yet much smaller — of the evergreen southern magnolia, but the undersides are silvery-white with a silky sheen. The twigs are unusual in being bright green. I
All this reading, thinking and writing about magnolias makes me long for spring, when I can go on a magnolia search. To keep me contented until then, I can ride about the Virginia countryside and admire' splendid examples of Magnolia grandiflora planted many years ago and the tulip tree, Liriodendron tulipifera, also a magnolia, that defines and graces the Virginia countryside.
