On April 19, the Sperryville Gateway Committee leadership sat around a few tables upstairs in the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad building, examined vendor proposals, heard their presentations, and selected what they believed to be the best professional planning, design, engineering, and management company to take the next step in the Sperryville Gateway Project.
The winner: The Cox Company of Charlottesville. The Cox Company has undertaken major studies for communities such ds Orange, Staunton, Luray, and Williamsburg.
The next step? The preparation of specific construction plans and documents for both the Main Street and the Thornton River area of Sperryville. These construction plans and documents will address the needs expressed by the Sperryville community in the ■ Gateway Committee’s original public survey.
The plans and documents will cover a footbridge over the Thornton River; new walkways and sidewalks; issues related to land use; preservation considerations; enhanced signage, street lighting, street furniture such as benches and trash receptacles, pavement and crosswalks, utility plans, layouts for parking, new landscaping and buffer improvements, and other improvements.
Four professional companies had responded to the County’s Request for Proposal (RFP) sent out March 17 (Sperryville has no legal standing; therefore the county handles contractual matters). The proposals from the companies were due April 7 for initial review. Each company then made an hour-long presentation and answered questions from the selection committee on April 19. The
