BY MIKE MAHONEY RappahannockNews Writer The Year 2000 Rappahannock County Relay for Life can trace its origin to an event that took place in Tacoma, Washington fifteen years ago. A medical doctor, Gordon Klatt undertook a one-man, twenty-four hour marathon around a local track and raised $27 thousand for the American Cancer Society. The’ following year, 340 supporters joined Dr. Klatt and the Relay for Life was bom. Each year since, more communities have conducted their own and the Relay is now \ a nationwide phenomena. > Rappahannock residents J trace their own participation • in the Relay over a shorter I period. Rappahannock leaders decid) ed that they could recruit . more teams and raise more | money if they staged their ! own, local Relay. They proved ' themselves more than right. ! Their first time ever efforts ‘ achieved first place results in ■ the Mid-Atlantic Region and • seventh place results in the | entire country in terms of money raised per capita. It is worth noting that the Relay for Life is truly a local, community undertaking. Staff from the American Cancer Society do provide guidance and coaching. But the actual event, from the preplanning stages to the final clean-up, is made possible by the hundreds of hours of effort donated by community members.
