nognty-uve mends and members of the Rappahannock Historical Society attended a celebration Sunday paying tribute to the architect, carpenters, builder and those who have donated contributions to the ongoing new addition to the society building on Gay Street in Washington.
The German celebration called “Richtfest” (meaning building festival) involves placing a decorated tree on the very top of the new addition to celebrate the framing of the roof.
As leaders of our churches and community, friends and members of the society gathered under a tent behind the historical society building, Frank Wagner of the Goethe Institut of Washington, the German cultural center, explained the history of this festival. Then, he recited the following German poem, which is customary at these events:
“God placed courage in the carpenter’s heart to build into the sky and the skill to cut beams and raise them towards the heavens. When the ridge beam is plumb and the “Richtbaum” sends out its greeting into the countryside, then the carpenter dedicates the structure according to the time-honored tradition.
