Acting on a proposal by School Superintendent Dr. David Gangel, the Rappahannock County School Board approved a salary increase for school teachers and administrators that exceeds that budgeted for fiscal year 2000-2001. With acceptance of the proposal, teachers will see an increase of 7.4 percent plus a step, which equates to a total of approximately 9 percent, and administrative staff will receive a salary increase of 4.75 percent plus a step. These salary increases will cost nearly $116,000, and Dr. Gangel proposed to fund them by deferring specific purchases and reallocating funds that were designated for other purposes.
Rappahannock supervisors, at their May 1 meeting, approved the School Board's budget in full, but were unable to add additional funds to sweeten the, teacher salary pot, despite the nearly unanimous expression of support to do so. At that meeting however, the Board of Supervisors suggested that Dr. Gangel find a way to increase educator pay within the constraints of the budget, and he met that challenge successfully.
Given the School Board approval, Dr. Gangel and his staff can now begin to prepare teacher contracts that include the increased salaries. There is renewed hope that these cooperative efforts of the Superintendent, the Board of Supervisors, the School Board, and the many supporters of better teacher pay will help retain Rappahannock public school educators.
