Dress code only a
possibility
Rumors about the imposition of a dress code in Rappahannock schools precipitated a petition drive by RCHS students. Colin Nichols addressed the School Board about student opposition to a dress code, and suggested that efforts and energy be directed instead to "fix things that need fixing . . . like putting air conditioning in classrooms and getting water that tastes like water . . The petition, according to Colin, included the signatures of 175 people opposed to a dress code-teachers, parents, and 125 students.
High School teacher Beth Gall attempted to clarify the dress code issue by noting that a draft code was prepared for School Board review by a teacher Steering Committee subcommittee because of some instances of "inappropriate dress" and a lack of specificity in the current dress code. She emphasized that the students would be involved in code development, and that the draft presented to the School Board was a preliminary effort. RCHS Principal Jack Raines further explained the subcommittee's rationale and dress code development process, and appeared to defuse the issue. School Board Chair Rosa Crocker referred the draft to the Board's Policy Subcommittee, and additional discussion will be conducted
