roads, some dating back 150 years. Backers of the road adopted a yellow and black band with an arrow, painted on telegraph poles, to guide drivers. Going south in the wintertime was the “in” thing for the rich. On arriving in Miami, real estate developers were waiting to sell the travelers Florida land.
The Dixie Highway ran from Sault Sainte Marie, Mich., to Miami, Fla., using a closely paralleling eastern and western route. Again, real estate developers were at the end of the line. A resort at Pinehurst, N.C., was created to snag southbound tourists, and its promoter backed a Capital Highway route that was to pass through his property.
Even Culpeper and Loudoun County were caught up in the “farmer versus the wealthy” controversy. In early 1918, two routes from Warrenton to Orange were proposed. One was to parallel the Southern Railroad. Farmers said it was for tourists heading south from Pennsylvania. The rural route they favored was ignored. In early 1920, the
