Washington Town Treasurer Elaine Viguerie presented a proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2001-2002 that showed an increase of four percent, from $274,050 to $285,150, over the FY2000-2001 budget.
Mayor Stew Willis opened a public hearing on the budget, and John Byam broke the ice, questioning the wisdom of adding nearly $80,000 in capital reserves to the Washington Water Works reserves (bringing that total to about $275,000 by the end of the next fiscal year). Mr. Byam said that there “used to be a better balance between the Washington Water Works and wastewater (reserves),” suggesting that it would be more appropriate to set aside more funds than budgeted ($10,000) for a wastewater treatment system, and to take those additional funds from that proposed for the water works reserves.
Mr. Byam also spoke of the need for additional funds for tourism, proposing that some money be used to establish a Town tourism council. Mayor Willis responded to that suggestion, asking that Mr. Byam and the Business Council make recommendations.
