As we have traveled the lighways in Rappahannock this »pring we have seen some of the host beautiful trees in bloom. * First it was the redbud, then sne dogwood. The past couple weeks we have seen another aeautiful tree known as the [jaulownia (pronounced paw-lone-a). It is also known as a “Princess Tree”, “Empress Tree”, ‘perfume tree”. Local people Imow it as an “elephant ear” because of the enormous size leaves, or “coffee tree”. is It was named in honor of £nna Paulownia, the granddaughter of the King of the Netherlands in the 18th century. From its association with her it got the names princess and empress tree. i. The paulownia has a beautified flower show in May. The tree is covered with wisteria like clusters of lavender and white dolored blossoms with a sweet fragrance. The large heart snaped leaves appear after the blossom.
In fall the large leaves drop and the seed pods make the tree identifiable. The pods break open and release their seeds which are carried by the wind. The dried seed pods remain on the tree throughout the winter. The rustling sound of the wind blowing through the pods make a rattling sound. •; Seeds from a young tree will not germinate.
