ijouaoun limes commented that it hoped Virginia money would not be diverted to help build “part of a national road from New York to Florida, with a fork going to New Orleans in order that the idle rich of the north may be limousined in comfort and ease to Florida for the winter months and New Orleans for the races.” Small farmers were losing out to the rich.
As for Rappahannock County, it soon had to come to grips with a coast-to-coast “national” road. Lee Highway. On Jan. 19, 1921, the birthdate of General Robert E. Lee, the Lee Highway Association held its first annual convention in Knoxville, Tfenn.
The March 1921 issue of “American Motorist” notes Virginia State Highway Commissioner, Coleman, and Wade H. Massie of Rappahannock County, the Chairman of the Virginia State Highway Commission, were there. They knew of the proposed route through Virginia, but probably wondered at the suggestion at the end of the conference that airports be built along the edge of Lee Highway. That idea never got off the ground.
