Some of the boys from Port Norfolk Park got together the other day down in Fork Union to talk about Freddie Cobb. We are all paunchy and gray headed now, older than our fathers were in those summer days when all we did was play ball.

In the early 1950’s, we played baseball everyday from April until late September. Then we played football everyday until it got too cold. Then we went inside for basketball everyday until spring popped again and it ^as time to oil up the baseball gloves. I never saw a soccer ball until I was in my 20’s.

Port Norfolk Park, a playground by a coal yard next to the railroad tracks in a waterside neighborhood, was our field of dreams. I was maybe 11 when I first met Freddie Cobb. He was maybe nine and half my size. But he was twice the athlete. He was pound for pound as
