Response
Grieving is a normal response to loss that leads to resolution and recovery. The first phase of mourning often begins with sen sations of shock and numbness, which give way to the contradictory emotions of denial and preoccupation. Often, mourners oscillate between denial and disbelief and a preoccupation with the lost loved one. The second stage of grief is frequently characterized by disorganization and depression. And. while this is the most painful and protracted stage of the grieving process, it slow ly leads to the third and final stage of reorganization and acceptance. The mourner's spirits gradually rise and life returns to normal. While death exerts a pronounced effect on our lives, the grieving process tempers us to make us stronger. Sometimes early losses prepare us for later ones. We are never ready to lose those we love, but understanding the process of grief can help with our patience w ith the intensity of feeling tnat accompanies our loss.
