The second half of the program opens with two songs from Songs of TVavel by Ralph Vaughan Williams because, says Balestrieri, “to me they represent the crossing of the folk idiom and the pastoral tradition into true art song. There are many songs from the period that deal with the image of peddlers, fairy folk and longing for a pastoral retreat. “The roadside fire” and “Youth and love” both evoke a vision of the British countryside as a haven for lovers and as a shimmering, mystical place where the drama of youth and love is played out.”
