Sarah Van Dam is a dog lover. She and husband Steve have their Doberman mix, Jackson, she’s extremely active with the Rappahannock Animal Welfare League (RAWL), and she also has young Myann to raise for Canine Companions for Independence (CCI).
Though Jackson is a most engaging young man and obviously deserved of a column or two of newsprint himself, Myann and the CCI puppy raising program are the subjects here, and Jackson will just have to wait (sorry Jackson).
Myann too is engaging, and just the kind of dog you just want to bring home for your children, but Myann has a job to do and she seems to be up to the task. If she proves capable after extensive training, Myann will become a companion for a person with a physical or developmental disability and she might turn on a light switch, guide her charge through a busy street, or just be a friend on a lonely winter’s night.
CCI has been preparing dogs for companion work since 1975, and this non-profit organization has helped thousands by providing welltrained and devoted canine pals to those in need since then.
