At Fork Union the other day I met Paul Frederick Cobb Jr., the little boy who never knew his dad. With him was six month old Paul Frederick Cobb, III. They dedicated a memorial to Freddy. And Doug Wetmore gave a scholarship in Freddie’s name.

The recent news flurry concerning the Bob Kerrey incident stirred some deep feelings among my generation. Vietnam was our war and it was a god-awful mess. It seems to me that a nation, which has forgiven those who fled to Canada to avoid the draft, should doubly forgive those kids who went into the jungles of combat to do their duty. They were our best.

Among some, it is unfashionable to speak of old fashioned virtues like courage, duty, honor and valor. It is considered corny and politically gauche. Well, Freddie Cobb was an old fashioned kid. And in the end he was more a man than the rest of us. Just as on the ball field at Port Norfolk Park, Freddie gave all. And I am very proud to have known him.
