If Purgason didn't learn teamwork when he was at Rappahannock, he must not have played any sports, or worked with the debating club, or the band or any of the activities — sports or academic — that promote teamwork.

Finally, if Purgason is worried about 5-foot, 7-inch kids who weigh 300 pounds. I suggest he support a daily PE program for our kids, and an expanded intramural program that serves all the school’s children, not just those who try out for teams.

I've heard that the athletic director’s job is to promote varsity sports and teams. Intramurals and rec league are not part of the job description.

In these tight budget times — and in our small county — maybe the job description should be rewritten. Maybe the person in that position should be tasked to balance the competing interests and develop programs that promote health and fitness for the greatest number of our kids.
