On Saturday, April 20 the 24th Annual Fodderstack 10-K “Incompetently Started Race” will be performed in Flint Hill followed immediately by the Fodderstack 10-K Race, which will run from the site of the debacle in Flint Hill to Washington.
A bungled start for the race has become one of Rappahannock County’s most hallowed traditions. Participants have had everything from a stalled starter’s vehicle to a misfiring starter’s gun, a malfunctioning bull-horn, and a lost timekeeper to their credit, not to mention the vicious deer attack on the fender of the Sheriffs Office van a few years back.
Most of the county governmental and volunteer brain trusts have combined to ensure that something truly stupid will set the tone for the race.
While there are any number of participants who legitimately compete for the $300 cash prize (offered to the runner who bests the course record of 31:26 for men or 36:46 for women), the emphasis is on having a good time.

The trophies for first, second and third place — crafted by local artisan Merrill Strange for males and females in each of the now twelve categories — also acts as something of an incentive ... and perhaps the Eva Smith Memorial trophies to the first finishing Rappahannock County resident (male and female) also adds some fleetness of foot to a field which is otherwise rather short on attir
