lights as the game got underway at 7 p.m. It was a cool night also for the Panther bats as the Madison hurler stymied their offense. It ended quietly in defeat for the Rapp side 6 to 0.
Back at home it was a real thriller, as Jason Jenkins overcame a rough first inning that included three walks and giving up all four of the Luray JV’s runs in the game. The JV Panthers clawed their wav back and found a way to score two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning and get the 5 to 4 victory over the visiting Mountaineers. Freshman Ethan Berry led the Panther attack with two hits.
Softball
The Varsity Lady Panthers played only one game this past week, but it was a big one and they won it. Thursday night, they traveled with the baseball team to Madison for the district opener. There is an intense rivalry between the girls on both these teams and tension is always in the air for these contests. Thursday night was no exception, as both pitchers locked horns in a real battle.
When it was over, it was the reigning State Champions victorious again. Led by the “Dynamic Duo” of Sharp and Johnson, the Panthers won 3 to 0. Junior Rachel Sharp was the defense and Johnson was the offense.
The rest of the Lady Panthers played their supporting roles like highly skilled parts in a well-oiled machine. Sharp struck out 12 and allowed only one baserunner — that was rival pitcher Holly Utz, whose 7th-inning single spoiled Sharp’s perfect game.
