The Rappahannock County

School System is at a crossroads. It must choose its way and its purpose in the present environment of high stakes testing. It has recently been introduced to a simple but compelling way - the Effective Schools way.

The Rappahannock County School System, thanks to the generosity of the Greve Foundation and Headwaters, has been engaged in the study of a self organizing process called the Effective Schools Improvement Process.

This process was developed by analyzing and studying effective schools and identifying those characteristics which led to their success. It is a process used by schools around the world. Some of the more important characteristics associated with an effective school are self study and evaluation, assessment and change, participatory and shared decision making, and learning for all (children and adults).

Self study and evaluation is a continuous process in an effective school. It is a process that gives the school access to itself.

Information is gathered from children, staff and community. Afterwards, all of the people in the school work together to identify the school’s purpose, goals.
