Rappahannock County and its immediate surrounding area was the site of extensive activity in the American Civil War. Over 53 engagements are recorded here between the Armies.
On Thursday, April 11 you will have an opportunity to learn more about these events that occurred right outside your own doorstep. The Amissville Area Community Association is sponsoring a presentation by local Civil War historian Art Candenquist on “The Civil War in eastern Rappahannock County”.
His talk will focus on events in Amissville Viewtown and the surrounding areas. The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. at the Amissville United Methodist Church on Lee Highway. It will precede the association meeting.
Some encounters like Corbin's Crossroads, Newby’s Cross Roads and Waterloo were quite large and intense actions involving several thousand troops. The ferocity of the fighting is illustrated by the fact that at least four Metal of Honors were awarded related to actions that occurred in the county.
In addition to combat, our area was regularly crossed by units of both sides on the march related to many of the major campaigns of the war. The Rappahannock River fords and passes through the mountains to the Valley directed they use this route. This includes Jackson’s Corps march through Amissville
