toward second Manassas in 1862 and Lee’s retreat from Gettysburg down Chester Gap and along Richmond Road.
The later resulted in a sharp fight just east of Laurel Mills between George Custer’s Cavalry and Alabama Infantry. Mosby’s cavalry also operated extensively in the county and for a time his headquarter’s was in Woodville. In addition, much of the county was essentially occupied by the^IJnion Army of over 40,000 soldiers for some months from late 1863 through 1864. No part of the county was untouched by the war.
Some of these Civil War events have markers. The majority do not. Yet, the importance in the war and impact on , the soldiers involved and to the citizens of the area was long lasting.
