It was the beginning of the Bull Run District competition for all teams this past week and it provided plenty of excitement. School let out for spring break but the Madison Mountaineers brought the week to a close with plenty of opening game action.
The soccer and baseball teams split with their archrivals from next door but the softball teams dominated, as the “girls of summer” swept a pair. The track teams were cheated out of their season opener, as spring rains washed away the dual meet with Strasburg on Tuesday, March 26.
Baseball
Monday, March 25 saw the baseball teams in action against their non-district rival from Luray. The varsity traveled to Luray to play a pair of 5-inning games. The Panthers startled the hosting Bulldogs with a 6 to 3 opening game victory.
Junior Noah Starks recorded his first career win with five strikeouts and no earned runs. The seniors led the way on the offensive end as Jeff Ritenour and Zach Ashby each went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI’s apiece.
The second game was not so kind to the visiting Panthers as the Luray team came out swinging. When the dust cleared it was Luray 13 to 1 over the Rapp side, in what seemed like a game between two totally different teams.
