ment that “No chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides other than those approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (or its successor) shall be used on any of the Property.” Some homeowners, though, may ignore the product instructions on how to apply chemicals. They put too much on their lawns and when it rains, the chemicals join runoff and damage streams. EPA itself is currently re-examining certain lawn chemicals, and is phasing out a few.
What of the 1,000-gallon buried propane tanks, one per house? The tanks are constructed of heavy steel with special coatings to prevent corrosion. Propane itself is a non-toxic, nonpoisonous fuel. It cannot contaminate the soil, wells, or aquifers.
The latest (2001) Annual Drinking Water Quality Report on the South Wales Public Water Supply notes the quality of the drinking water meets all state and federal requirements. South Wales makes use of three wells, one being 305 feet deep with a yield of about 70 gallons per minute (gpm), a second 547 feet deep with a yield of 41 gpm, and a third 268 feet deep with a yield of 275 gpm. Iron and manganese in the water is treated for aesthetic purposes, e.g., to correct for taste and discoloration of clothing or staining of water fixtures.
Trees are key
elements
A drive about South Wales reveals that most residents prefer clusters of original trees with good canopy about their homes. These provide privacy, coolness in the hot summer months, serve as a windbreak, and prevent soil erosion.
Large trees are one of the key elements in cleansing acid rain and other potential water pollutants. Some homes with large expanses of lawn show major erosion problems, probably due to the current drought condition. A 25-acre community park, a proffer by the South Wales developer in 1989, lies along Route 621, Colvin Road.
Spilman Park has a pervious gravel parking lot, thus no runoff, and a picnic pavilion. A hiking trail and amphitheater are contemplated for the park, which is a dedicated open space. Other subdivisions
At the southwest intersection of US 211 and Route 229 lies another planned subdivision. This is the Epstein property with a planned use of 10-acres for commercial development, possibly office and retail buildings and a daycare center, and 115 acres for 157 homes. As with the residential developmerit on the north side of US 211, the Epstein property awaits the availability of water and sewer facilities.
