The first step is to get your soil tested. The information you’ll need pertains to ph, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium (NPK), organic matter and trace mineral status. There are a bunch of different options here. One way is get the above tests done through our local extension office.
Kenner Love informed me that, based on test results, extension agents can recommend amounts of lime and animal manure needed to raise fertility and adjust the ph balance. (However, they are not equipped to give conversion for non-synthetic fertilizers.) Simple kits for ph i Rapitest is a good one) can be easily purchased for home tests. I prefer a ph meter, which also measures fertility, as it’s less messy, easier to use
