On fertile ground

A friable, rich, humusladen soil is every gardener's dream. With such a soil, plants grow lush and green, defy most pests and diseases, and water, that precious element, is encouraged to linger in the microbially dense, crumbly tilth. A fantasy? Only if this type of soil remains a dream, instead of the reality that is possible in every garden.
Sometime in the spring I wrote an article about soil structure, humus, soil organisms and so forth. Also mentioned were the necessary practices of zero or minimal tilling and deep mulching to assist nature’s processes in creating healthy soil. One
